Fr. Bud Grant, Ph.D. co-founded the Academy for the Study of St. Ambrose of Milan (ASSAM) in 2010. He is a Professor of Theology at St. Ambrose University specializing in Environmental Theology and Historical Theology. He has been at the university since 1995 and currently serves as the Chair of the Theology Department. He has degrees from St. Ambrose (then) College ( BA 1980), the Pontifical Gregorian University (STB 1984), Creighton University (MCS 1997), and the University of Iowa (PhD 1999). His published works include among others: A Case Study in Thomistic Environmental Ethics: The Ecological Crisis in the Loess Hills of Iowa; translator of Cesare Pasini’s Ambrose of Milan: Deeds and Thoughts of a Bishop; several articles for the Studia Ambrosiana; and a long running series on environmental OPED for the Catholic Messenger. Resent publications include: 2025: Co-Editor and contributor, Oxford Patristics Conference workshop fascicle “Ingredimini mecum in hoc … theatrum creaturae (Hex. 6.9.1.2): Varied Perspectives on Ambrose’s Hexameron,” Oxford University Press, pending; 2024, Author, “Ambrose of Milan, Christian Sage: Resourcing Humanity and Goodness from Late Antiquity” Cambridge Scholars Press; 2023, “Ambrose and Community” Ambrosians on Ambrose series, No.1. 2021; Co-Editor and Contributor, “Ambrose of Milan and Community Formation in Late Antiquity.” Cambridge Scholars Press. Co-Editor and Contributor, “Ambrose of Milan’s Misericordia,” Studia Patristica, Vol. CXIII. He lectures regionally on environmental theology.

Fr. Bud lives on an acreage with horses, sheep, poultry, cats and a dog.  He is also the Sacramental Minister of St. Andrew Parish, Bluegrass, Iowa.  He enjoys hiking, writing novels no one will ever read, and prairie restoration projects in his spare time.
